Our benefits at a glance

Health insurance

First, learn more about your options before you choose the health benefits that work best for you and your family.

    • Medical coverage. We provide several options with different monthly contribution rates and copays, including our DFW ConnectedCare plan just for team members residing in the DFW area. Certain geographies have an HMO option as well.
    • Prescription drug coverage is included with all medical plans, so you’re automatically enrolled no matter which medical option you choose. CVS Caremark administers our prescription drug program. You’ll also have access to Staywell Rx for free or discounted medicines and supplies to manage asthma, blood pressure and diabetes.
    • Dental coverage. We offer two different levels of coverage through MetLife Dental.
    • Vision coverage. Wear eyeglasses or contacts? EyeMed administers our vision plan.
    • Spending accounts. You’ll find several different pre-tax health spending account options you can use to pay for eligible out-of-pocket medical expenses, as well as a dependent care flexible spending account for certain childcare and eldercare costs.

Income Protection

Next, consider whether you and your family need additional income protection in case of disability or death. American provides basic term life insurance coverage at no cost for all team members, but you can choose to purchase additional life and accident insurance as well as optional short- and long-term disability coverage. Plans and costs vary by workgroup.

Added Benefits

Finally, be sure to check out the Added Benefits that help you navigate life and all of its twists and turns. From pet insurance to legal plans to critical illness insurance, we offer a broad range of extra benefits to make life a little – or a lot – easier.

New hire benefit guides

For a quick overview of benefits available to you, select the guide for your workgroup below.

Enrollment deadline and eligibility

Enrollment deadline

You have 60 days from your date of hire to enroll in the majority of our benefits. It’s important to enroll or waive benefits coverage within those 60 days, as you will be automatically enrolled into the Core medical option otherwise.

Don’t worry about doctor’s appointments or emergencies that happen after you begin working but before you enroll in coverage — our medical, dental and vision plans are retroactive, meaning any eligible costs you incur before you make your enrollment choices will be reimbursed under your plan’s coverage.

For Added Benefits, your enrollment window varies. Some benefits, like pet insurance and identity theft protection, you can enroll in at anytime. Others, like critical illness insurance and legal plan, limit your enrollment window to within 60 days of hire or a qualifying life event.

Dependent eligibility

To find out who can be included on your benefits coverage as a qualified dependent, read our eligibility guidelines. Once you’ve enrolled dependents in coverage, you’ll be asked to submit documentation to verify their eligibility.

Health and well-being resources

With our round-the-clock workforce, American offers both online and in-person resources to help you manage your health and well-being at work and at home.

Onsite medical clinics

Onsite clinics managed by Premise Health are located at most of our airport hubs. You’ll have access to acute and preventive care as well as some vaccines.

24-hour nurseline | Doctor on Demand

A 24-hour nurseline and Doctor-on-Demand round out our health benefits to help you and your enrolled dependents find the care you need, anywhere and around the clock.

Employee Assistance Program

Our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a free and confidential 24/7 resource for active team members. The EAP provides a listening ear, professional counseling and curated referrals to help you manage all of life’s moments, big and small.

Well-being events

Certain work locations – including some airports – host well-being events, such as free flu vaccines, preventive health screenings, mobile mammography and onsite dental care. Schedules and events vary.

Retirement savings

You don’t have to wait to save for your future at American.  Here, you can participate in our 401(k) plan, administered by Fidelity, beginning on day one. You become eligible for employer contributions after one year of service. To help you meet your investment goals, the plan offers you a range of investment options along with low expense ratios and low plan fees. Balances with previous employers are eligible to be rolled over into the American plan.
