How it Works
You will be part of a five-person team that competes against a new team each week for five consecutive weeks.
Stretch your legs during the warm-up round, starting July 4.
Then the official start is July 11, with the first of five weekly rounds.
Weekly rounds start each Wednesday. Be sure to enter your steps for each round by the following Wednesday to count toward the previous round. You can sync your fitness device or enter your steps manually.
Log steps on at least five out of seven days of the week, and you will be entered into a weekly drawing for your choice of an Apple Watch 3 or a Samsung Gear S3! If you qualify for at least four out of five weekly drawings, you will be entered into the grand prize drawing for one of two $2,000 American Airlines Vacations Vouchers. Eligible team members and covered spouses who qualify for the grand prize drawing may also earn their $75 “Get Engaged in your Health” Wellness Reward.
The challenge is open to all U.S.-based mainline American Airlines team members. Spouses enrolled in Standard, Core, Value, PPO 80/90/100 or OOA medical options are eligible to participate in the challenge as well.

In addition to participating using your computer or tablet, you can also use Wellness At Your Side™ from WebMD Health Services – available for both iPhone and Android devices – to register and track your steps during The Invitational.
After downloading and opening the app, enter your last name and special access key to log in. You’ll find the key on the WebMD Wellness portal under Healthy Living > Wellness At Your Side.
Click “Wellness at Your Side.” This will display your last name and access key. This is what you need to type into your phone.

- What is The Invitational Team Steps Challenge?
Physical fitness is important to one’s well-being. One way to improve your physical fitness is to keep active. The Invitational is a weekly team-based competition designed to help you improve your physical fitness, specifically number of steps you take on a daily basis, while having fun.
You will be part of a five-person team that competes against a new team each week for five consecutive weeks. The team with the most steps each week is the weekly winner.
- When can I register to participate?
The registration week and warm-up period is between June 20, 2018 and July 10, 2018. Registration must be complete by July 10, 2018.
- What are the dates of the weekly rounds?
The challenge includes five weekly rounds which begin on July 11, 2018 and end August 14, 2018.
Round 1: July 11 – July 17
Round 2: July 18 – July 24
Round 3: July 25 – July 31
Round 4: August 1 – August 7
Round 5: August 8 – August 14
- How are teams formed and assigned?
Participants will have one of three ways to be a part of a team for The Invitational.
- Create a Team: participants have the ability to start a team at any point during the one-week registration period. As part of the team creation process, they can select the color and mascot to represent the name and shield of their team.
- Join a Team: participants have the ability to join an already formed team at any point during the one-week registration period.
- Automatic Team Assignment: if a participant has not opted to create their own team or join an already formed team, at the end of the registration/warm-up week, the participant will be randomly assigned to a team of five members. Their team will be assigned a team name.
If the team a participant has created or joined is not full by the end of the registration/warm-up week, the team could be merged with another team, filled by participants that have selected auto-assignment, or filled with “ghost players”.
- Can I reserve my team for specific individuals?
Team spots are available on a first come, first serve basis and cannot be reserved or held for participants within The Invitational. However, if you would like somebody to join your team, they can search your team name and join. To join a team select Team > Join a team > Search > Enter team name.
- Can other participants see my results?
Yes. During The Invitational experience, other people will be able to view your progress such as your number of daily steps, average number of steps overall, etc. Participants can change their user names during the registration process (e.g., Mary Jones could change her name to Super Walker).
- Can I can see other participants’ results during the challenge?
Yes. During The Invitational experience, you will be able to view other participants’ progress such as their number of daily steps, average number of steps overall, etc. Participants can change their user names during the registration process (e.g., Mary Jones could change her name to Super Walker).
- How are my steps entered?
When registering for the challenge, you will select a fitness device, or choose to manually enter your steps. Once you have made your selection, you can change the method and/or switch your device throughout the challenge, but your new entry method will begin on the following day.
Your steps will be automatically uploaded or manually entered throughout each weekly round. You will have 24 hours after the end of a round to enter steps for that round. After this time, you cannot enter or change steps data for any previous round.
- Can I sync my iPhone or Apple Watch to record my steps?
To record your steps from your iPhone or Apple Watch, download the MyFitnessPal app from iTunes and create an account. You can then sync your iPhone or Apple Watch through the MyFitnessPal app by clicking on more, then steps.
You can then sync your MyFitnessPal account to your WebMD Wellness account to record your steps automatically.
- Why are the number of steps on my fitness device or app not the same as on The Invitational?
There may be a delay between your own fitness device or app syncing with The Invitational. You do need to make sure your device is syncing with its corresponding app. It may take up to 24 hours for syncing to take place.
- Will the steps entered into The Invitational also be captured within my PHR/Trackers?
All manual entry steps data entered into The Invitational (up to the 50,000 cap) will also be reflected in a participant’s Personal Health Record (PHR) or trackers. All steps a user has recorded in their device/app will upload to their PHR, only 50,000 will be recorded in The Invitational. No changes will be reflected in a participant’s PHR or trackers more than 24 hours after a round ends. However, steps entered directly into a participant’s PHR or trackers will not be reflected within The Invitational challenge.
- If I change my step reporting method, how are my steps impacted?
You can change your method of step reporting without negative impact towards step count. However, the method of steps reporting may be temporarily impacted as your profile updates. This will be dependent on if you have already reported steps on the day of change or not. If you are changing from device tracking to manually tracking, you will not be able to override steps entered by your device. If you are changing from manually tracking to device tracking, you will be able to enter steps for past days.
- If you have already reported steps for the day –
If you have already reported steps, any steps reported via your new method and your old method will count towards that day. Going forward, only steps reported using your new method will be reported.
- If you haven’t entered steps for the day:
If you have not entered any steps on the day of step reporting method change, the new entry method will start on the day of change.
Note: Once a round closes, you will no longer be able to enter steps for that round. You will only be able to enter steps for the current round.
- What happens during the registration/warmup week?
Registration will be open from June 20, 2018 to July 10, 2018. No registrations will be accepted after July 10, 2018.
During registration, you join the challenge and identify your method of entering steps data—either via automatic device upload or manual entry.
Once your registration is complete, you can participate in a warm-up period or “practice round”. No steps uploaded or entered during the warm-up period count toward any of the rewards. The goal of the warm-up period is to let you practice and get comfortable with the challenge and how to follow your progress before the actual challenge begins.
- Who can participate in the challenge?
The challenge is open to all U.S.-based mainline American Airlines employees. Spouses enrolled in Standard, Core, Value, PPO 80/90/100 or OOA medical options are eligible to participate in the challenge as well. Spouses will first need to register for the WebMD Wellness portal and following the “Spouse Login” link.
- Are international team members eligible to participate?
Yes! International team members can visit Jetnet for details on how to log steps and participate.
- What is an achievement?
An achievement is something you accomplish during the course of the challenge.
Example achievements include:
- Participating at least five days out of a seven-day round.
- Being on a winning team for a round.
- Reaching a milestone number of steps for a certain number of days.
- Achieving “high stepper” status.
Achievements will display within The Invitational.

- What are The Invitational rewards?

- What is Match-up Chat?
The Invitational allows a you to participate in 5 Match-up Chats that correspond to each of the 5 challenges rounds. Within each round’s Match-up Chat you can send a message that all of your teammates and the 5 members of the opposing team can view. You can also view all the messages your teammates and members of the opposing team send within a round’s Match-up Chat. Only those 10 individuals can send and view messages within a specific round’s Match-up Chat.
You will also find an indicator next to the Match-up Chat tab that shows you how many new messages have been sent since you last accessed Match-up Chat. Additionally, if you’ve enabled the Wellness at Your Side app, you will be sent a daily push notification if new messages are available in The Invitational. You may turn off these notifications within the Settings your mobile device or smartphone.
- What is Team Chat?
The Invitational allows you to communicate with your teammates throughout the Registration/Warm-up week, the 5 Challenge Rounds, and the two weeks until the last Visibility Date. Only your teammates can send and view messages within a Team Chat.
You will also find an indicator next to the Team Chat tab that shows you how many new messages have been sent since you last accessed Team Chat. Additionally, if you’ve enabled the Wellness at Your Side app, you will be sent a daily push notification if new messages are available in The Invitational. You may turn off these notifications within the Settings your mobile device or smartphone.
- Will I receive Push Notifications from The Invitational?
Yes, if you are using the Wellness app, you will receive push notifications throughout the challenge, helping to keep you informed and on track with your goals, progress, and chats.

- How do I access the portal from my mobile device or smartphone?
There are two ways to access The Invitational via your mobile device:
- Log into www.webmdhealth.com/americanairlines from a mobile browser, OR
- Download WebMD Health Services’ Wellness at Your Side app.
From there, you can access a link to Challenges from your home screen.
- If my device is lost, left at home or the battery died, how do I track my steps today?
If you are temporarily unable to use your original device, you can download and utilize the FitBit app to track your steps for the current day. You can also use the website to enter steps for the day manually. If you do not currently own a FitBit or have a FitBit account, you can create an account for free.
To manually enter your steps using FitBit.com:
- Log in to FitBit.com
- Select “Log” from the top toolbar
- Select “Activities”
- Locate “Log Activities” and select the walking icon.
- Enter the date, start time, duration, and distance (in steps)
- Select “Steps” from the dropdown menu next to “distance”
- Select “log”
In order to utilize this feature, you will need to sync your FitBit account with the Invitational.
Note: Only activity for the current round will be updated. Once a round is completed and a round winner is announced, you are unable to add steps to that round. You will have 24-hours after a round ends to enter steps for that round.
